CRA

The Agriculture Research Council has competence of scientific research in agriculture and forestry. It works linked with Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry Policies. The Council is formed by 47 research Institutes distributed on whole of national territory, with an overall staff about 1800 people. The themes more directly linked with the present project are carried out by the Research Centre for Forest Ecology and Silviculture (CRA-SEL), Research unit for Apennine silviculture and management (CRA-SFA) and the Research unit for Mediterranean silviculture (CRA-SAM). CRA-SEL, SFA and SAM are Forestry Research Institutes acting at national level in the field of applied research on forests, forest trees, forest environment.

CRA-SEL has developed a long-term expertise on the following issues: (i) management of natural forests, of reafforestation areas and secondary forests, (ii) forest ecology, (iii) dynamics of tree and stand growth & structure, (iv) tree farming on set-aside lands, (v) monitoring of forest ecosystems, (vi) restoration, maintenance and improvement of types & scales of biodiversity, (vii) preservation of genetic resources in situ & ex situ. Since its establishment, the CRA-SEL, has been developing a “problem solving oriented” research activity by a number of permanent monitoring plots located throughout the peninsula and major islands. Current guidelines: applied research on the management and dynamics of forests according to stakeholders & societal demands and environmental functions, from strict conservation (protected areas) to multiple-use options (production and amenity) to prevailing wood production. Lab. facilities & equipment: forest mensuration, forest ecology, forest genetics.

CRA-SFA has developed a long-term expertise on the following issues: (i) multi-scale forest planning and management (ii) management of natural forests, of reafforestation areas and secondary forests, (iii) forest ecology, (iv) dynamics of tree and stand growth & structure. Since its establishment, the CRA- SFA (formerly as a branch of Experimental Institute of Silviculture 1967-2007), has been developing a “problem solving oriented” research activity by a number of permanent monitoring plots located throughout central and southern Italy.Current guidelines: applied research on the planning, management and dynamics of forests according to stakeholders & societal demands and environmental functions, i.e. from strict conservation (protected areas) to multiple-use options (production and amenity) to prevailing wood production (natural & artificial forests).

CRA-SAM has developed a long-term expertise on the following issues: (i) management of natural forests, of reafforestation areas and secondary forests, (ii) forest ecology, (iii) dynamics of tree and stand growth & structure. Since its establishment, the CRA-SAM (formerly as a branch of Experimental Institute of Silviculture 1967-2007), has been developing a “problem solving oriented” research activity by a number of permanent monitoring plots located throughout southern Italy. Current guidelines: applied research on the management and dynamics of forests according to stakeholders & societal demands and environmental functions, i.e. from strict conservation (protected areas) to multiple-use options (production and amenity) to prevailing wood production (natural & artificial forests).
