Update of activities
April 2015

Prepared by Lado Kutnar and ManFor C.BD team members of Slovenian Forestry Institute, Ljubljana, April 30, 2015.

Italian part and final document: prepared by Bruno De Cinti (Technical Manager of the Project) and ManFor C.BD team members, Monterotondo (RM), May 4, 2015.

Action 1-2 – Project Management and Project Monitoring.

PMa – PMo.

  • Coordination of different project activities and administration tasks.
  • Preparation of the financial documentations for the Slovenian part of ManFor C.BD project.
  • Coordination of the ManFor C.BD Best Practice Manual preparation.
  • Technical meeting with local managers in site 05 (Pennataro).
  • Implementation of silviculture test area (salamandrina) in site 05 (Pennataro).

Action 3 – Ecological connectivity, landscape patterns and representativeness of test areas.

ECo

  • Preparation of annual report.
  • Preparation of Best Practice Manual Action contribute and of the annual activities report.
  • RapidEye images classification and spatialization of forest management treatments at landscape level.

ECo SI

  • Preparation of the ManFor C.BD Best Practice Manual.

Action 4 Analysis and design of forest management options.

AnDeFM

  • Post harvesting visit to sites 01 and 06.
  • Preparing the data and text for ManFor C.BD Best Practice Manual.
  • Data elaboration.

AnDeFM-SI

  • There were no activities in this month.

Action 5 Implementation of forest management options in the test areas.

IMP

  • Implementation of silviculture test area (salamandrina) in site 05 (Pennataro).
  • Routine surveys (meteo) at the site of Pennataro – Montedimezzo (Molise region).
  • Building up the ACCESS database (in progress).
  • Data processing.
  • Technical meeting with local managers in site 05 (Pennataro).
  • In order to study the results of forestry measurements obtained during this project, a spatially explicit forest simulator is currently under development. This simulator is based on the well known forest simulator SILVA developed by Prof. Hans Pretzsch and colleagues at University of Munchen. During the previous months the we tested different methods for defining an initial forest on a large area based on field measurement obtained in a number of small sampling areas. This is an important part because simulation results are strongly affected by initial position of all trees in the simulated stand.

IMP-SI

  • Preparing the data and text for ManFor C.BD Best Practice Manual.

Action 6 Assessment of indicators related to carbon cycle of managed forests.

ForC

  • Preparing the data and text for ManFor C.BD Best Practice Manual.
  • Site 04:
    • Carbon and Nitrogen concentration measurement in soils.
    • Characterization of soil samples.
    • Soil respiration, moisture and temperature measurements.

ForC-SI

  • Regular maintaining of plots/field equipment and data collection.
  • Preparation of soil samples for analysis.
  • Analysis of soil samples from the second sampling (replication after logging) from all test sites.
  • Preparation of the ManFor C.BD Best Practice Manual.

Action 7 Assessment of indicators related to forest biodiversity.
